Children’s Book School & Library Visit: THEY CALL ME WOOLLY

About the Book
Blue-tongued or burrowing, woolly or whooping, there's much to discover in an animal's name. An animal's name can tell you where it's from, like the African elephant. A name can also tell you what the animal eats, like the rat snake, or what it looks like, such as the walkingstick, or even what it sounds like, such as the whooping crane or the howler monkey.
In this celebration of the natural world, Keith DuQuette uses simple language and stunning illustrations to show us the amazing members of the animal kingdom who embody the evocative names we give them.

About the Author/Illustrator
Keith DuQuette was an impressionable child who at various times wanted to be a pet-shop owner, an architect, a painter, an anthropologist, a cartoonist, a naturalist, and a center fielder for the New York Yankees. He is now none of those things. But he draws on all these early influences in creating picture books.
My Presentation
My reading of the book is followed by a series of slides that highlight the steps I took to create THEY CALL ME WOOLLY. This offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at how an author and illustrator develop a picture book. In this case, it’s a non-fiction book about animals and how they are named. Topics covered include my research methods, text creation and editing, page design, book layout, and illustration techniques. At the end of the visit, children will have the opportunity to name their own animal in a creative art and writing activity.
THEY CALL ME WOOLLY is a nonfiction book that covers various topics suitable for a range of educational programs, such as science, language, and visual arts. It is a perfect book for use in an ESL program.
My presentation uses a slideshow format, which I believe is the best way to share my images and text with audiences of any size, whether in-person or online. I can customize my presentations to meet my audience’s needs, from 1st grade to high school classes. My presentation length is 45-60 minutes per session.
